Speaking of angry e-mails, when you are angry beware of sending the so-called flaming e-mail. Flaming is a virtual term for venting or sending inflammatory messages in e-mail. “Flame fights” are the equivalent of food fights and tend to affect observers in a negative way. Avoid flaming because it tends to create a great deal of conflict, which can spiral out of control. What you say cannot be taken back! It’s always a good idea to write out your thoughts, leave them overnight, and revisit them the next day. Chances are tempers will have cooled and an unfortunate action can be avoided altogether.

E-mail is a great tool for communicating when used properly. It is good for sending short messages to those who are hard to reach, when there is no hurry (just because you send it doesn’t mean the recipient will respond or even read it right away), for sending along documents, or for sharing memos. You will find the additional tips in textbox 6.2 to be useful. Keeping them in mind will increase the effectiveness of your communication.
